This trek from the Annapurna foothills to the top of Poon Hill is one of the most pleasant trekking routes in the Himalayas in Nepakl. This trek, which brings you to the village of Ghorepani offers spectacular mountain scenery.

The charming settlements of Gurung and their slate-roofed houses bring you into another world, as do amazing rhododendron forests ablaze with ivory, rose, apricot and crimson bouquets and deep sub-tropical valleys all set below the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range.

Also known as the small Annapurna Circuit, it’s a very popular short trek for those with time limitations. The hike offers amazing Himalayan views of Mount Dhaulagiri (8167m), Annapurna 1 (8091m), Machhapuchhre / Fishtail (6998m), Nilgiri (7041m), Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna II (7939m), Annapurna III (7555m), Annapurna IV (7525m), Lamjung Himal (6988m) and more.

Rising to 3210m, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek will provide you with gradual climbs, a beautiful environment and a spectacular sunrise over Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Dhaulagiri, as the sun changes its colour from pink to gold to silver – breathtaking!

I was fortunate enough to complete the Annapurna Poon Hill trek in November this year (2013). I cannot recommend this trek highly enough! We started with a riverside walk on the first day taking in the gently rolling hills before tackling the 3000 steps challenge the next morning.

On our third morning, we started walking at 5 am and it is, without a doubt, the best start to the day I have ever had. We started by staring up at the stars and ended with hot lemon and honey at the top of Poon Hill! The 360-degree views at Annapurna Poon Hill were spectacular, to say the least. Watching their peaks constantly changing colour during the sunrise hour was a sight I will never forget.

The last two days were spent walking through forests, beside flowing rivers and in vast valleys. This trek is a great experience and one I would recommend to everyone!

As I had limited time for trekking in Nepal, I opted for the five day Annapurna Poon Hill Trek as my first taste of trekking in the Himalayas. I wasn’t disappointed! It was a spectacular five days that left me wishing for more. The scenery throughout is absolutely amazing. I was lucky enough to photograph monkeys in their natural habitat as I trekked through beautiful rhododendron forests.

Watching the sunrise when I reached Poon Hill is a morning I will never forget. It offered a spectacular view of the Annapurna range in the most glorious setting. This is a wonderful trek to complete for anyone on a time limit or for those who are looking for an introduction to trekking in Nepal. I will definitely be returning for more!

My wife and I travelled to Nepal to visit our daughter – apart from visiting her we also wanted to see the Himalayas. My daughter recommended the Umbrella Foundation and its partner Umbrella Trekking Nepal. We only had a limited time so Umbrella Trekking helped us to choose the best circuit for us – the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek, part of the Annapurna Circuit.

We enjoyed the trip immensely and I can say after all the travel I have done around the world this was one of the most memorable trips we have ever done. Monish, Amar and Susan guided us through the 6-day trails and even carried most of our gear. They not only organized all the stops, food and the lodges – they also had great knowledge of the area and were able to explain the history and culture of where we were, naming plants, birds and mountains on the way. We could just focus on the walk ahead and enjoy the scenery. The flowering rhododendron forest, the organic food, the terraces and villages, the people and the spectacular Himalayas make this trip unforgettable.

My daughter explained that Umbrella Trekking is a new effort from The Umbrella Foundation and prepares older residents of their childhood homes for life after The Umbrella Foundation. This group is training young adults to work in Umbrella Trekking or any other trekking companies in Nepal allowing them to be independent and learn a skill and have a career. The young Amar was being trained by an experienced guide (Monish) to have better chances in his future and did a wonderful job, we really enjoyed having him as part of the trek. We loved the experience and can only express our gratitude to The Umbrella Foundation for this project to help these wonderful kids and are glad we could help out while having the trip of a lifetime.
