The Everest Base Camp trek is the classic Himalayan trek taking you to the foot of the earth’s highest point and nearby magnificent mountain peaks, where warm Sherpa hospitality awaits the adventurer.

The Khumbu region is home to Mount Everest (called Sagarmatha in Nepali) which at 8848m is the world’s highest mountain as well as numerous other peaks including Lhotse (8514m).

First summited by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, Everest has traditionally been the ultimate goal for mountaineers. Today trekkers of all ages seek the challenge of reaching this famous mountain’s Base Camp. Flying in to Lukla, you will explore the mountains and valleys around the towering peak, rest in local Sherpa teahouses and learn about their traditions and culture.

The Everest area offers a variety of routes and your adventure can last anywhere from a week up to a month.

The best decision that I made I recently undertook Everest Base Camp trek and intended to complete this without a porter/guide however after falling ill after only day 1 I was faced with the decision to either spend a few days to recover or hire a porter guide who could help with my bag.

Thankfully one of the guides Arjun was available and willing to go with me for 12 days (this is just after Arjun had completed the Gokyo trek). This was the best decision that I made as not only did Arjun help with the bag he was also very insightful in areas that we were passing through and staying at night. Arjun spoke perfect English and this was great as we could talk with ease and I never felt the “language barrier” being an issue at all. While undertaking the treks Arjun was always careful to ensure that we were not running the risk of altitude sickness due to our pace and was always encouraging me to take on water where necessary and to take ample amount of breaks. Whenever there was something I may have asked that Arjun did not know he would investigate and find out further information off other guides/Nepalese people and ensure that he fully answered my question.

During our stays in the guesthouses along the way Arjun always put my needs ahead of his and if there was ever any issue he would look after me without complaint. It was great to see the enthusiasm that Arjun had for trekking and being a guide and how keen he was to learn about my home culture. Hearing about his upbringing was very fascinating and day by day I saw Arjun as a friend as well as a guide. Arjun has a great humour and always smiling which rubs off on you. We spent many nights playing cards and telling stories with other trekkers.

Also, the fact that we were of a relatively similar age meant that we talked lots about issues/topics relevant to us. It was great to have someone to enjoy the highlights of my trip (EBC, Kala Patthar, Cho La Pass and Gokyo Ri) with and I definitely feel that thanks to Arjun he made a great trip an even better and more special one!!

They were so efficient and supportive through our journey from start to finish. Both my sister and I completed the Everest Base Camp Trek with Umbrella. Umbrella uses a local trekking company ‘Nature Treks’, and I have to say they were first class.

They were so efficient and supportive through our journey from start to finish. Pema even invited us to celebrate ‘Holi’ the ‘festival of colour’ with them…an amazing experience. Our Guide Lorkendra was the best Guide we could have asked for. He was very efficient and experienced, and understood our sense of humour…we pretty much laughed all the way to the top! He was such good fun and made our trek a truly wonderful experience. We had the absolute privilege of having ‘Deepak, supported by Umbrella to become a trainee Guide on our trip. His life story was unbelievable.

It was our first time to reach Base Camp together…amazing. We also had ‘Sagar’ our Porter accompany us on the trip…such a lovely, helpful, yet innocuous guy. Meeting the local Nepalese people was fabulous – they were so friendly and pleasant. We enjoyed getting a taste of Nepalese culture along the way, especially the tea houses – it was very memorable. The best part of booking our trek through Umbrella was that a portion of the money goes to helping the Children of Nepal. Would I do it again? Yes, without a doubt! So get booking people!
